September Issue & Letter from the Editor

Tuesday, September 29, 2015 HALFSTACK MAGAZINE

Hello readers!

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out this latest issue of Halfstack Magazine. I wanted to wait to share this month's letter from the editor to coincide with our issue release. This fall we are excited to share our Annual Music Issue. This year we are adding a twist in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. We are featuring a Chicago based star on the rise: Lil Lito. Carlos “Lito” Garcia is Chicago’s first bona-fide Hispanic hip-hop/R&B star that, in spite of his twenty-one years, is experiencing his own musical re-birth. After a devotion of ten uncompromising years singing, composing, and most recently producing talent, Lil’ Lito realigned himself as an artist in order to optimize his exposure to a much broader and diverse audience.

We featured Lito and two amazing models decked out in Macy’s product for our Fall editorial shoot. The styling and aesthetic of the shoot were inspired by the beauty of Havana, Cuba in the 1950s and we shot on location at the Humboldt Park Boat House. This shoot almost felt like I was coming full circle. Growing up in Humboldt Park made such a huge impact on the person I’ve become. Although life was hard, the Latino community that I’ve been a part of has always been amazing, kind and supportive. I’m proud of being an American, something that was important to my family that moved here, but I am just as proud of my Puerto Rican heritage and roots. The Puerto Rican culture is evident throughout the community of Humboldt Park and although things have changed since I lived there, it still feels like home every time I come back.

To that note, it is even more exciting to see the Latino business community thriving in Chicago. One organization in particular that is working hard to create a voice for designers is Chicago Latino Fashion Week. In this issue we feature the founders of the organization: Arabel Alva Rosales and Cesar Rolon. This year the events of Latino Fashion Week take place September 30th – October 4th at Block 37’s newest Latin Food Hall: Latinicity.

In this issue we have an amazing round up of some inspiring back to school products, apps, and ideas to get you into the groove of fall. Jen Oquendo shares an array of inspiring books to get you in the right mindset. There is fall fashion, fall beauty and so much more from Teresa, Michelle and Danielle.

Laura shares the latest Instagrammers to follow and be inspired by as well as an in depth and raw feature on Oscar Castillo, the man behind the infamous sneaker head community website: www.modern-notoriety.com. Liv also shares an insightful interview with the founder of the popular website www.prcouture.com - Crosby Noricks.

Our newest West Coast Contributor: Carolyn Portner shares her experiences going from Midwest Girl to West Coast Career Woman in her column: LAnding Safely. Tyronita shares a moving op/ed on the #blacklivesmatter movement along with a historical exploration of the evolution of Hip Hop music. Finally, we close out this issue with Perry’s 2015 Lollapalooza experience.

I truly hope you enjoy this issue. Thank you for walking along side us on this journey and remember you can keep up with your daily dose of Halfstack on www.halfstackmag.com!
