Girl Power: End Slut Shaming!

According to finally feminism 101, “ Slut-shaming, also known as slut-bashing, is the idea of shaming and/or attacking a woman or a girl for being sexual, having one or more sexual partners, acknowledging sexual feelings, and/or acting on sexual feelings.”

The revolution to end slut shaming began a few years ago and is really starting to gain some traction. Women’s rights have been a hot topic these days and so has female sexuality. The frequent juxtaposition is that if a man sleeps around he’s cool. If a woman does it, she is not accepted nor respected in most situations.

For so many years how a woman dresses has dictated how she is perceived to the world. If she shows a little more skin, she’s usually labeled as promiscuous. If she’s covered up, she’s conservative. Fortunately, the awareness of slut shaming is shutting down any kind of harassment (verbal and/or physical) towards women.  A woman is not what she wears. Her values, her morals, or actions are not based on the length of her skirt.

This is something that is so important for young women to understand. A woman’s sexuality is based upon her own personal preference and should not be judged or labeled based on such things. Especially because at the end of the day it’s nobody’s business but her own!

An important point to reveal is that unfortunately women slut shame women too! If so, sometimes more than men. Why does this happen? “ The first thing to realize when talking about women slut-shaming each other is that in fighting among oppressed groups [there] is a necessary part for keeping those groups oppressed; ergo women are encouraged, through internalized sexism, to distrust each other and fight for male approval.”.

Over the past few decades sexual freedom has been exercised more and more. Although, the outlook on women and their own personal sexual freedom and choices have been ignored.  Sounds pretty contradictive, right? Which is why slut shaming must end. We are the change. The change starts with us.
