Halfstack Highlights Ep. 29 - Gotham's Newest Heroine: Black Canary

Sunday, July 26, 2015 Pearl

DC's newest adaptation of Black Canary takes a fresh spin on one of Gotham's most beloved heroines. This heroine was recently introduced in the television series "Arrow", so she might not come as too much of a surprise to comic book fans.

However, the newest version of Black Canary in the comics, written by Brenden Fletcher (BATGIRL) and illustrated by Annie Wu (Hawkeye), is quite a bit different from anything we've seen of her in the past.

Black Canary (or Dinah Lance) is the lead singer of a punk-rock band called "Burnside" in the city of Gotham. In the comics, she is on tour with her band mates when she stumbles upon all sorts of unintentional trouble. Dinah has to use her skills in martial arts and rock 'n' roll in order to get her band members and herself out of some deep mishaps.

I was able to speak with Brenden and Annie on this week's Halfstack Highlights podcast. In this podcast, we discussed the different inspirations behind their new take of Black Canary. Brenden and Annie also shared their musical influences for the comic as well as the different iconic singers and frontwomen that influenced their Dinah. You can listen to the full episode below!
