"Are you a warrior?"

With what was a seemingly brief spring coming to an end, and a searing summer rapidly closing in. Everyone is looking for a way to beat the heat, while simultaneously being able to enjoy their favorite outdoor activities. You know the ones I am referring to, running, swimming, hiking, concerts, cookouts, you know, the usual. Well, have I got news for you! All these events can be found in a single place! I am referring to the Warrior Dash sponsored by Red Frog Events.

Based out of Chicago, Red Frog Events, held the inaugural Warrior Dash in 2009 in Joliet, Illinois at CPX Sports. Following that first race, the Warrior Dash has become vastly popular on national, and later, a global scale. The company is partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; the money raised will fund the construction of a therapy center. Additionally, the race has many sponsors, including, but not limited to, The National Guard, Miller Brewing Company, Moosejaw, and Monster Energy Drink.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Warrior Dash, it is a 5K (3.1 miles) mud run with a twist. Now, as if running 3 miles was not enough, scattered throughout the course are various obstacles that not only challenge the runners, but push them to the limits of their endurance. With the conclusion of the race, participants slide down a slippery slope consisting of thick, gray, gooey mud. From there they are launched into a sludge pit of pandemonium while they slither under barbwire while the finish line mocks them up ahead. Upon completion of the grueling course the runners are greeted by a cheering crowd, of family, friends, spectators, other contestants, and a sense of pride in knowing that they have finished the rigorous race.

There is more to this event than just a race however; the areas surrounding the event are packed with mini-games hosted by various sponsors, tents offering food, drink, and merchandise. Nestled within the heart of the grounds is stage where bands are scheduled to perform throughout the day. The atmosphere surrounding the event is very animated, everyone is energetic, the sweet smell of smoked turkey legs lingers in the air, cheers and music can be heard off in the distance. Here and there people trudge about, some are dressed in outrageous costumes preparing for race, while others triumphantly tromp around covered in mud and grass rejoicing with their fellow runners who have crossed the finish line. The whole scene conveys a rustic serenity.

So there you have it, beat the heat, get in some exercise, enjoy a concert, cookout, and a brew. Whether you are running the race, cheering on a friend, or stopping by for the colourful ambiance, the Warrior Dash has something for everyone and is a great way to change up that same old stick-in-the-mud summer routine. No pun intended of course.
